Dixon, R. and Muthesius, S (1978) Victorian Architecture: With a short dictionary of architects and 250 illustrations. 2nd edn. London: Thames and Hudson 40, 41 Cragside, Northumberland, by Norman Shaw, 1870-c. Lord Armstrong is shown (right) seated in the dining room inglenook, in front of stained glass by Morris and Co. |
This is the spectacular home of Lord Armstrong an genius inventor, innovator and landscape designer, whom alongside Norman Shaw created a house way above its time. Brilliant don't you think?
Well, I was just looking at change and this is an example of what kind of change the designers wanted to achieve. They each wanted to create something unique in its own sense, Cragside had hot and cold running water, central heating, telephones, fire alarms, a Turkish bath suite and a passenger lift. Most amazing of all, it became the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity.
The Victorian's were an innovative bunch, always trying to achieve the "impossible".
