an introduction
circa 1837 - 1901
The Victorian epoch was named after Queen Victoria (1819-1901), she was the first English monarch to see her name given to the period of her reign whilst still living. When Victoria became Queen of England and the British Empire, the Empire was quite big spreading across the Americans, South Africa, India and Australia. At the time of her death the British Empire had expanded significantly, which is no surprise considering she was working on it for 64 years.
