First of all let us start by dividing the Victorian Age into its three periods;
Early
Mid
Late
High Victorian Gothic Style was an eclectic architectural style and movement the developed during the mid 19th Century . My main focus of study will be this period and style of Victorian Britain.
Well, before one can entirely understand the High Victorian Gothic Style it is important to start with the basics...
The High Victorian Gothic style soon emerged as the most powerful alternative to the Classical Styles, designers moved away from the Classical Styles due to a growing concern and inspiration from the surviving heritage of The Middle Ages of their country, their imaginations were wild with excitement from the thought of the terror and fantasy and the picturesqueness of Gothic Style. Houses were now being built in different "versions" of the Gothic style, the new High Victorian Gothic homes were impossible to relate the ones built during the Middle Ages.
Looking at the Middle Ages in brief...
Early into the Mid- Century the designers believed that they "invented" the Gothic Style, a notion that was later found to be true only for France. The Gothic style was growing more and more popular, and thus was given the following names:
Early English Gothic (1180-1275)
Decorated Gothic (1275-1380)
Perpendicular Gothic(1380-1520)

So the Victorian's were influenced by these three distinct styles and used them as a foundation to support their ideas, BUT it is important to note that The Victorians did not just "copy" exactly what they did, they incorporated their own unique style to the buildings Exteriors and Interiors. Although in my opinion, I think The Victorians did copy them in the respect that ever Victorian Building, Exterior or Interior has a mysterious and tantalizing story behind it...
